The benefits of being a military reservist are measured in euros, days of training, and rank advancement prospects. These criteria help you evaluate whether a commitment to the reserve aligns with your civilian life.
Pay in the French Armed Forces
The operational reserve pays for each day served. The amount does not depend on your civilian salary. It follows the same rules as those for active duty personnel, with potential supplements and specific tax treatment.

Reservist compensation
Pay is calculated based on rank and index, under the same conditions as for career military personnel. Added to this are the residence allowance, family status supplements, and certain allowances related to duties, risks, or hardships. Among the benefits of being a military reservist, the net daily remuneration generally falls between €40 and €200.
When it comes to pay, the branch makes no difference: for a comparable rank, no branch systematically pays better than another. The High Committee for the Evaluation of the Military Condition provides the following indicative grid for March 2024.
| Rank | Net daily pay (March 2024) |
| Soldier | €50.37 |
| Sergeant | €56.08 |
| Chief Warrant Officer | €84.35 |
| Captain | €110.45 |
| Lieutenant-Colonel | €133.30 |
Operational reserve taxation
These amounts are exempt from income tax, and you do not need to declare them. Conversely, the pay is subject to social security contributions applicable to civil servants: it is therefore not paid without deductions.
Payment is made once a month, with an average delay of about 60 days after the period of activity. Anticipate this gap if you are counting on this sum to fund equipment or a course.
Retirement rights
The pay opens up retirement rights, notably through the Additional Retirement for Civil Servants (RAFP). However, each day does not create a full military pension. Cumulative receipt with a pension is possible under certain conditions, except in the case of a continuous call-up of more than 30 days. A former military pensioner may request a pension review: this requires at least one month of continuous service. The index of a new rank is only considered after six months of effective service in that rank.
Available bonuses and reimbursements
Beyond daily pay, several systems reward the length of service or support personal projects. Each imposes precise conditions regarding the contract and the number of reserve days.

A loyalty benefit
The loyalty bonus amounts to €250 gross per year, regardless of rank. It is exempt from income tax. Three conditions apply:
- First contract: a duration of at least 3 years.
- Second contract: a renewal of at least 3 years.
- Minimum activity: at least 37 days per engagement year during this second contract.
Payment is made each year, starting the month following the anniversary date of the second contract. For a second contract signed on January 1, 2026, the first payment arrives starting February 1, 2027.
Study aid
With the same 37-day threshold as the loyalty bonus, the specific study allowance reaches €100 gross per month, or €1,200 gross over 12 months. It applies to those under 25 as of October 1, enrolled in a vocational or higher education institution, holding an initial 5-year contract, and committed to serving 37 days per school year.
In the event of insufficient days, lack of attendance, or breach of contract, the allowance may be suspended, then partially or fully repaid. No repayment is required in the event of medical unfitness, nor if the employing authority did not allow you to complete the required days.
Activity-related expenses
A contribution of €1,000 toward a driving license (Category B) may be granted. You must have signed before age 25, never have held a license, and have at least 50 days of activity. You must also be more than 2 years away from the end of the contract and be enrolled in a driving school.
Once called up, you receive temporary travel allowances for the round trip between your home and your place of assignment. Other coverage varies:
- Accommodation and catering: depends on the unit and site; check each offer.
- Equipment provision: determined by function and mission, with no universal package.
- Personal expenses: equipment not provided and expenses outside of call-ups remain your responsibility.
Regarding career transition, an equivalency to work in private security becomes accessible after 3 years of commitment and 110 days of service. Among these days, 20 must be completed in operational missions, and the required regulatory training must have been completed.
Training and rank progression
No prior military experience is required to begin: the reserve trains its recruits, then guides them toward greater responsibilities.

Initial military training
No single national duration exists: the path varies according to the offer, unit, and specialty. In the French Army, the benchmarks are as follows:
These modules form a foundation, extended by specialized training throughout the engagement.
- General initial reserve training: 13 days.
- General elementary reserve training: 12 days.
- Squad leader training: 4 days.
Before applying, compare the duration stated in each offer with your available vacation time.
Valuable skills
Skills acquired in the reserve can be recognized in higher education: ECTS credits, partial or total course exemptions, or even internships.
For reserve officers, training was modernized at the end of 2024. It incorporates more distance learning and practical simulations.
Several paths exist depending on the profile, allowing you to adapt the program to your availability.
Progression and responsibilities
Advancement follows a clear logic: enlisted soldier, team leader, non-commissioned officer, then officer, depending on your skills, career path, and the needs of the military.
A civilian expert can also join directly as a specialist reservist, with responsibilities commensurate with their expertise. The decree of June 25, 2025, provides that their contract specifies their functions and the rank conferred.
Commitment and required availability
Being a reservist does not mean permanent presence. You remain a soldier at the service of the armed forces only during your call-up periods, based on a negotiated volume.
Duration and service volume
The contract is concluded for 1 to 5 years, renewable. The reference duration is 60 days per calendar year. It can be increased to 150 days with your consent, and up to 210 days for certain positions of national or international interest.
In practice, the official portal indicates between 5 and 210 days of activity per year, for an average of 35 days. At the Ministry of the Armed Forces, the average reached 35.6 days per reservist in 2024. Each period lasts at least half a day, according to a provisional program updated at least once a year.
Suspending or ending your contract
An operational reservist may request suspension of their contract for a maximum of 24 months. The initially scheduled end date is not extended.
The contract may also be terminated at your reasoned request. The military authority may terminate it when conditions are no longer met, particularly in the event of unfitness.
Reconciling employment and studies
In the private sector, you are entitled to at least 10 working days of absence per year, reduced to 5 possible days in companies with fewer than 50 employees. The notice period is one month, or 15 days with a responsiveness clause accepted by the employer. Your employment contract is suspended, but these periods count toward seniority, paid vacation, and social benefits; no dismissal can result from this.
A civil servant retains their salary for up to 30 cumulative days per calendar year. Beyond that, they are placed on detachment for the excess period. For students, the organization adapts to availability, with possible accommodations for their curriculum.
Becoming a reservist to serve
Joining the reserve of the armed forces remains open to a wide variety of profiles. The conditions concern nationality, fitness, and civic situation, after which each position specifies its own requirements.

Conditions to join the reserve
To become a military reservist, you must be a volunteer, hold French nationality, be at least 17 years old, and be medically fit.
Three other criteria are examined during the application process:
- National service: be up to date with your obligations or the Defense and Citizenship Day.
- Civic rights: enjoy them fully.
- Judicial record: not have been the subject of certain convictions.
Since August 3, 2023, the age limit is set at 72. An application after age 50 remains possible depending on your fitness, skills, and the needs of the position.
Missions and sought-after profiles
Reservists participate in domestic and foreign operations, operational missions, population and sensitive site protection, or by providing expertise. The Navy reserve specifically recruits in IT, logistics, anti-drone warfare, nautical instruction, administration, and functions related to vessels.
Some positions remain demanding: in an infantry regiment, a mission may involve shooting, carrying weapons, night work, carrying loads, and equipment maintenance. Evaluate your physical condition before applying for this type of offer.
Applying to the French Navy
To become a reservist in the Navy, the process follows five steps: online application, motivation interview, medical exams, unit interview, then assignment. Since November 2025, the "Recruit Better" module of SI ROC allows you to view job descriptions and apply directly.
Since June 28, 2025, successful completion of a military initiation or advanced national defense training entitles you to priority review of your application.
Frequently Asked Questions
