Historical context — For collectors

The Bézard compass is one of the most iconic navigation instruments of the 20th-century French army. Adopted and standardized by the French armed forces, it equipped generations of soldiers, officers, and non-commissioned officers from the Indochina War (1946–1954) until the 1970s.

Designed for robustness and precision in field conditions, the Bézard is distinguished by its prismatic sighting system integrated into the lid, allowing for taking an azimuth while simultaneously reading the dial — an innovation that made it the benchmark for French military orientation for over three decades.

It accompanied paratroopers of the 1st BEP in Indochina, legionnaires in Algeria, and mountain units in the Alps. Finding a new-old-stock example, never used in service, is exceptional today — almost all surviving Bézard compasses show signs of wear linked to intensive use in the field.

A rare collector's item, at the crossroads of French military history and industrial precision heritage.
